BOARD MEETING
SATURDAY – APRIL 20, 2002

Officers Present: Terry Slabic, President
Gerry Winkler, Vice President
Don Thomas, Secretary
Jerry Sheahen, Treasurer
Dale Ritchie, Membership Chair
Chip Sheahen, Water Quality Chair
Guest: Dave Mahan - AuSable Institute

Terry Slabic, President, called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM The Treasurer’s report given by Jerry Sheahen reported that to date there were 105 paid members for the year 2002. Approximately $1500 has been contributed to the Lake Maintenance Fund.
The Secretary’s report was presented by Don Thomas. The MLA website (manisteelake.org) continues development. and data was distributed on the increasing number of “hits” and “sessions” for 2002. Also copies of an article was passed out that was submitted by Bob Stein and published in the Observer and Eccentric regarding a new Federal regulation requiring septic system inspections by 2003. These required inspections must be legislated by counties. MLA members are encouraged to make sure that the required inspections by Kalkaska Country are appropriate. This article is posted on the website. The membership committee and the Fund raising Committee: Dale Ritchie showed the Board a number of styles and colors of tee shirts and sweatshirt .The Board agreed unanimously; that several children and adult sizes be imprinted with the original MLA logo. When the shirts are available they will be able to be ordered through the website.
The Water Quality Committee report: Chip Sheahen introduced Dave Mahan who presented an outline of a grant proposal submitted by the AuSable Institute in which the MLA will be a collaborating partner. If funded we will need MLA members to volunteer for special training in order to educate lakefront property owners on regional lakes about how various modern life styles can pollute lake waters and simple solutions to these problems. Dave will attend the May membership meeting to further explain the goals and objectives of the grant. The Board agreed to support this grant in writing to the funding agency. The Board also unanimously agreed to purchase a publication entitled Your Lake and You. This will be distributed to all MLA members and non-members at the May membership meeting.
