August 10, 2005 Manistee Lake Improvement Board Update
Message From Janet Goulet (President)
The Coldsprings Township Board passed a resolution last night to establish the Manistee Lake Improvement Board by a vote of three to two. The resolution is joint with Excelsior Township and requires their Board to also pass it. The Excelsior Board was unanimous in its support of the resolution by a straw vote at its last meeting. Excelsior Board meets on the first Monday of the month and will probably meet on the Tuesday after Labor Day because the first Monday is Labor Day. It meet in the Excelsior Township Hall on County Road 571. (just north of Highway 72) at 7:00 PM. All are invited to attend and show support whether or not the live in Excelsior Township. We have been attending their meetings and the Board seems impressed with our support of the resolution.

The Manistee Lake Association has been working with the Coldsprings Board since February and after presentations by the Houghton Lake Improvement Board representatives and an engineer from Progressive AE (they handle Houghton Lake and about 40 other improvement boards) several board members were convinced of the need for a lake improvement board. The community realizes that this lake is a great asset that needs to be conserved. Mike Neubecker was instrumental in the passage of the resolution and his leadership was apparent.

From what was said at the Board meeting, it appears that the townships will appoint their supervisors to the Lake Improvement Board. The other members will be the County Drain Commissioner and a County Commissioner. The fifth member can be appointed from three names submitted by the Manistee Lake Association.

We have great hopes that this Board can bring about positive changes in the lake with the guidance of professionals.

Janet Goulet
